Stop signal
You can make traffic behind you aware of your intention to stop by giving a stop signal. You do this by pressing the brake pedal one or more times without actually braking. This will briefly activate the brake lights, making it clear to the traffic behind you that you intend to stop.
You might want to turn somewhere the traffic behind you isn’t expecting, for example, an entrance some distance before a junction. By pressing the brake pedal one or more times , you make your intention clear.
Sometimes, on a motorway, drivers turn on their flashing hazard lights to warn traffic behind them of a stationary or slow-moving traffic jam. This is, of course, permitted.
