Educational Measure Alcohol and Traffic
This compulsory course can be imposed on you if a police check reveals that you have been driving with alcohol. The course aims to stop you from driving under the influence of alcohol. And that you can get back on the road safely as soon as possible. For yourself and your fellow road users. Because driving with alcohol in your blood is very dangerous.
This course is compulsory for the following people:
- For experienced drivers who have driven with a blood alcohol level between 1.0 and 1.8.
- For experienced drivers who have been stopped twice in the past five years for driving under the influence of alcohol. In which the blood alcohol content was higher than 0.5 once.
- For novice drivers who have driven with a blood-alcohol level between 0.8 and 1.3.
- For novice drivers who have been stopped for drink-driving twice in the past five years. In which the blood alcohol content was higher than 0.2 on one occasion.
- For any driver who refused to cooperate with the police breathalyser once.
A novice driver is already at this blood alcohol level after 4 or 5 alcoholic drinks. For an experienced driver, it is after 5 or 6 alcoholic beverages. You can see that driving with a few glasses of liquor at point 1 can be a costly mistake. But more importantly, driving with alcohol in your system can be life-threatening.
Suppose you are convicted for the second time of driving with too much alcohol or drugs, or convicted of a combination of both alcohol and drugs behind the wheel. In that case, your driving license will automatically become invalid. You will then be prohibited from driving a motor carriage. Then the ‘Recidivism rules for alcohol and drugs’ apply. You can read more about this later in the course.
This course costs about 1,200 euros.
You may continue to drive during the course. It is also possible that the judge or public prosecutor has imposed a driving ban. Then, of course, you will not be allowed to drive.
If you do not take this compulsory course, your driving license will be invalidated, and you will not be allowed to drive again.
