Bus carriageway

busbaan

A bus carriageway is a section of road physically separated from the normal carriageway. A bus lane is part of the carriageway and is separated from it by a solid line. If the word “BUS” is displayed on a bus carriageway, only bus or scheduled bus drivers may use it.

If the word “LIJNBUS” is displayed on a bus carriageway, only scheduled bus drivers may use it. Emergency services may use the bus carriageway; they are exempt from the Road Traffic Act (RVV) if required for the performance of their duties. Taxis often have an exemption. Taxi drivers may then use the bus carriageway. A sign may indicate this. Other drivers are not permitted to use a bus carriageway.

Waiting and parking on the carriageway next to a bus carriageway is permitted, unlike parking on the carriageway next to a bus lane.

Article 1 of the Road Traffic Act (RVV).
Bus carriageway: carriageway on which the word “BUS” or “LIJNBUS” is displayed.
