Hard shoulder or emergency refuge area

A refuge area and hard shoulder (also called emergency lane at the CBR) are not part of the carriageway of an autoweg or motorway. They are not intended for moving traffic.
Except in emergencies, road users are prohibited from using a refuge area, hard shoulder, or verge on an autoweg or motorway.

Refuge area or hard shoulder: a section of road separated from the carriageway of an autoweg or motorway by a solid line, intended for use in emergencies, except for the duration of its opening as a rush-hour lane.
