Main carriageway

The main carriageway is mentioned only once in the RVV (Road Traffic Regulations). This is in the article stipulating that drivers entering the through lane of a motorway or autoweg via the acceleration lane or leaving the main carriageway via the deceleration lane must signal for these maneuvers.

Even though the main carriageway is only mentioned once in the RVV, you must be very familiar with the term main carriageway during your theory test. The photo shows part A of the main carriageway. Part B does not refer to the main carriageway because an acceleration lane or deceleration lane is not part of the main carriageway.

Acceleration lanes and deceleration lanes are included in the “carriageway,” but not in the “main carriageway.”

Article 1 of the RVV.
Main carriageway: a carriageway without the acceleration lanes and deceleration lanes.
