Rush-hour lane

A rush-hour lane is an emergency lane that is opened as a regular lane during heavy traffic. In practice, this will often be the case during peak hours, but depending on traffic volume, the rush-hour lane may also be opened at other times.
Outside of these times, the emergency lane continues to function as a regular lane.

To drive on a rush-hour lane, you must drive over the solid line. This is, of course, permitted. You may also cross the solid line if you want to leave the rush-hour lane.

If you are not overtaking another vehicle, you are required to drive on the rush-hour lane, as your position on the carriageway is as far to the right as possible.

Rush-hour lanes have been constructed with refuge areas at intervals of 500 to 1000 meters.
Rush-hour lanes are also equipped with cameras that allow the Rijkswaterstaat Traffic Control Centers to detect breakdowns and accidents quickly.
Do you need to stop because your vehicle breaks down in a rush-hour lane? Call 112 immediately! One or more red crosses above the road will be activated as soon as possible.

Article 1 of the Road Traffic Regulations (RVV):
Rush-hour lane: the emergency lane designated as a lane according to sign C23-01.
