Speedpedelec

speedpedelec

A speed pedelec is an electric bicycle that provides pedal assistance up to 45 kilometers per hour. In other words, you can cycle 45 kilometers per hour with a speed pedelec. To reach this speed, you usually have to pedal quite hard. Just like with a standard electric bicycle, the pedal assistance is electric. This means you have a battery that consumes power during the ride and therefore offers a limited range of pedal assistance. The number of kilometers you can cycle depends on the brand and the assistance level you set; you can usually choose from high, medium, or normal assistance, for example.

A speed pedelec is classified as a moped. This means that speed pedelecs must be used on the carriageway, where a speed limit of 45 km/h applies.

If a cycle/moped path is present within a built-up area, the speed pedelec rider must use it. The speed limit in such cases is 30 kilometers per hour.

If there is a cycle/moped path outside built-up areas, the speed pedelec driver must use it. The speed limit in such cases is 40 kilometers per hour.

The speed pedelec driver must always wear an approved helmet. The speed pedelec must have a yellow moped license plate.
By law, a moped, including a speed pedelec, must have a rearview mirror.
The driver must have at least a moped license (AM license).
A speed pedelec must have at least third-party liability insurance (WA).

Article 1 of the RVV (Regulations on Motor Vehicles and Road Traffic Act).
