Switch off the engine

motor afzetten

If you’re forced to wait longer than half a minute, it’s advisable to turn off your engine. Running your engine longer than necessary costs you money and causes unnecessary air pollution. Situations where you could end up waiting for a long time include:

  • An open bridge.
  • In a stationary traffic jam.
  • At a railroad crossing.
  • If your hamburger isn’t ready right away at McDonald’s.

According to the CBR, you should turn off your engine if the wait is expected to last longer than 30 seconds. If the CBR asks when you should turn off the engine and the answers are 1, 2, or 3 minutes, you obviously can’t choose 30 seconds. You’d use your common sense and choose 1 minute.
