Through road

stroomweg

Through roads are autowegen and motorways. The image above shows an autoweg.
Motorways consist of separated lanes. The speed limit on motorways is 130 kilometers per hour between 7:00 PM and 6:00 AM. Between 6:00 AM and 7:00 PM, the speed limit is 100 kilometers per hour. Signs can, of course, indicate a lower speed limit. Temporary speed limits are displayed on matrix signs above the road.

Currently, several motorways in the Netherlands have a speed limit of 130 kilometers per hour between 6:00 AM and 7:00 PM.

Autowegen do not always consist of separated carriageways. Often, there is only one carriageway. In that case, a double white line is drawn between the two lanes, with a solid green line in between. The white lines can be broken or solid. A combination of broken and solid lines is also possible. The curb lines along a motorway are solid.

The speed limit on autowegen is 100 kilometers per hour. Signs may, of course, indicate a lower speed limit.
Autowegen are generally less safe than motorways and have, for example, narrower lanes, no hard shoulders, and you can often encounter oncoming traffic.

Junctions with and between motorways are always grade-separated. On autowegen, junctions are usually at-grade.

Below are two examples. The left image shows a road where overtaking is allowed. The right image shows a road where overtaking is prohibited.
