Standing still – Autowegen and motorways

Logically, you’re not allowed to stop on the carriageway of an autoweg or motorway.
On a hard shoulder or emergency lane, you may only stop in emergencies. This is not true for activities such as standing still to operate a navigation system, make a phone call, or pick up a hitchhiker, for example.
You may also only stop on the shoulder in emergencies.
If you have a breakdown and need to stop on the hard shoulder, verge, or emergency lane, do so as far to the right as possible to minimise disruption to other traffic. Never remain in the car, including the passengers, but find the safest possible spot. This is even true in heavy rain, as visibility for other road users is even worse.
