Standing still – Level crossings

stilstaan op een overweg

Standing still at a level crossing is prohibited. This can lead to life-threatening situations.
Always keep level crossings clear, even in traffic jams, and always stop!!! before or after the crossing.

The Road Traffic Regulations (RVV) also contain an article stating that road users may enter a level crossing if they can proceed immediately and clear the crossing completely.
The same article also states that at level crossings, road users must yield to a railway vehicle and clear the crossing completely.

See, for example, this link where a driving instructor was killed in a collision with a train. Level crossings were, and still are, extremely dangerous.
