Standing still – Traffic signs

verboden stil te staan

If the sign E2, “No Stopping,” is posted, as shown in the photo, you are not allowed to stand still on the side of the carriageway where the sign is located. You are allowed to stand still on the verge and in designated parking areas.
You are allowed to stand still on the other side of the carriageway, because the sign only applies to the side of the carriageway where it is located.
A bottom plate can provide further information. In the image above, you can see that you are not allowed to stand still between the sixteenth and the thirty-first of each month. From the first through the fifteenth of the month, you are allowed to stand still and park.

Mnemonic:

The difference between sign E1 and E2 can sometimes be challenging to remember. There are two ways to remember the meaning:
Tip 1. Sign E1 has a stripe, streeP in Dutch. This ends with a ‘P’ of Parking prohibited. Sign E2 has a crosS. This ends with an ‘S’ of Standing Still banned.

Tip 2. Sign E1 has one line. This allows you to place the letters “NP” in the two spaces. “NP” stands for “No Parking.”

Sign E2 has a cross. You can place the letters “S.T.I.L.” in the four spaces. Standing still is prohibited.

Tip 3: You are not allowed to do anything at all near an X.
