Three-colour traffic lights

driekleurige verkeerslichten

When you approach a junction with three-colour traffic lights, the meaning is always the same:

  • Red = stop
  • Green = continue
  • Yellow = stop. Only if you are so close to the traffic light that you can no longer stop normally are you allowed to continue.

If the traffic light is green, keep in mind that the green light only applies if you intend to drive straight ahead. When you intend to turn right or left, you must be mindful of other traffic, which you must yield to.
If there is an arrow in the traffic light, different rules apply. See the next page for more information.

If you are driving and approaching a green traffic light, check your rearview mirror. If the light turns yellow, you’ll at least know what’s behind you. If it’s a lorry that isn’t keeping close enough distance from you, I wouldn’t attempt an emergency stop.

Traffic lights are often out of order at night. To alert you that you’re approaching an intersection, the traffic light usually flashes yellow.
When traffic lights are flashing, the standard right-of-way rules apply.
