Stop line

stop line

A stop line is a line drawn perpendicular to the carriageway. If you must stop at traffic lights or a stop sign (sign B7), you must do so before the stop line. If you must stop at traffic lights, drive as far as possible to the stop line. Detection loops are often embedded in the road surface. Only when you stand on a detection loop will a signal be sent to the traffic light, and the light will turn green again.

Sometimes, an additional stop line is placed before the stop line at traffic lights, with a designated space for bicycles, disabled vehicles, and mopeds. This is called an Inflated Bicycle Lane (In Dutch: Opgeblazen Fietsopstelstrook: OFOS).
The OFOS is designed to give these drivers a good spot at junctions with traffic lights. This means they no longer have to wait until all cars have cleared the area. This also prevents cyclists from having to line up in the blind spots of lorries.
