Bottom plates

As the name suggests, bottom plates are placed beneath regular traffic signs.
Bottom plates can indicate restrictions for specific categories of road users or exempt certain categories from specific behaviour. Bottom plates can also provide further explanation of the information displayed on the traffic signs.
Bottom plates can indicate the days or hours during which parking is prohibited.
Below is an overview of the most common bottom plates with a brief explanation.
Just like regular traffic signs, it’s also essential to know the meaning of the bottom plates.

gesloten voor fietsen met onderbord

The image on a bottom plate applies only to the category depicted on it. For example, consider the sign indicating that the road is closed to bicycles and unpowered disabled vehicles. Since the RVV rules regarding bicycles and cyclists, rather than the rules regarding mopeds and moped riders, also apply to snorfietsen and snorfiets riders, snorfietsen are also prohibited from entering this road.

If we now look at the supplementary sign indicating that cyclists are exempt from the traffic sign above, then only cyclists are truly exempt. This is because the category depicted on a supplementary sign is explicitly intended. Therefore, the bottom plate does not apply to snorfietsen.

Clear? Not yet? Then another example below.

combinatie c12 onderbord
The traffic sign indicates that the road is closed to all motor vehicles. Brommobielen must follow the rules for motor vehicles. This means that brommobielen are also not allowed on this road.
The bottom plate indicates that passenger cars are exempt. The image applies only to passenger cars. Passenger cars are allowed on this road, but brommobielen are not.

distance on a bottom plate
A bottom plate can indicate the distance over which a speed limit is effective. The image above asks in which situation a speed limit of 90 kilometers per hour is permitted. Sign A shows two arrows pointing upward after the distance. These two arrows indicate that the speed limit begins now and ends after 1.5 kilometers.
Sign B has no arrows next to the distance. This means that the 80 kilometers per hour speed limit is effective after 1.5 kilometers.

uitgezonderd fietsen en bromfietsen

The traffic sign indicates a one-way street, closed to vehicles, horseback riders, and drivers of riding or draft animals or livestock in this direction.
The additional sign indicates that bicycles and mopeds are permitted on this road. Since a snorfiets is a moped, it is also allowed on this road.

The bottom plate indicates that the traffic sign applies only to passenger cars. This means that any other driver, including a lorry or bus driver, may follow a different direction.

alleen voor vrachtauto's

The bottom plate indicates that this instruction applies only to lorries. All other drivers are permitted to turn.
