Category J – Warning signs
Sign Sign J1 – Poor road surface.
This sign is placed to indicate a poor road surface. Its placement is only acceptable for a short period. The road surface should be improved as soon as possible, making the sign unnecessary. However, this is often not the case. There are roads where warnings about poor road surfaces have been posted for many years.
A bottom plate can indicate the length of the road surface.
The sign is not used to warn about rutting. In the case of rutting, sign J37 is used in combination with a corresponding sign that reads “spoorvorming.”
Look far ahead and scan the road surface. This allows you to adjust your steering in time to avoid any potholes, bumps, and undulations in the road surface. This will enable you to maintain a relatively straight line.
Traffic insight:
- Hold the steering wheel with both hands.
- Watch for potholes.
- Watch for slippery sections of the road surface.
- Be aware of rutting. Rutting is indicated by sign j37, but rutting may also occur when this sign is in place. On wet roads, there is an increased risk of aquaplaning.
- Pay attention to the stability of your vehicle.
- Watch out for fallen and falling loads.
- Watch out for swerving traffic trying to avoid potholes and similar obstacles.
- There may be potholes in the road that can contain water. The water makes it difficult to see how deep the potholes are.
- Pay close attention to cyclists and mopeds avoiding uneven spots in the road.
Sign J2 – Bend to the right.
This sign warns of a sharp right turn. Sometimes the turn is difficult to negotiate at the current speed, so slow down.
Pay close attention to other traffic; they may not adjust their speed, which can lead to dangerous situations. Drivers who cut the turn may drive into your lane.
If you enter a right turn at too high a speed, centrifugal force will push you toward the outside of the bend. You could then fly out of the bend or cause a head-on collision.
Try to detect the curve’s course in advance. Look through the bend and see where it ends. You can often see the curve’s course by a line of trees or lampposts. Often, you’re dealing with a blind corner.
The following applies to every curve: Enter it slowly and exit quickly. If you enter a curve too quickly, you might never exit!
Be aware of vehicles that can lose their load in a curve. Sometimes vehicles are stationary with a breakdown, or they have stopped to unload their load.
Sign J3 – Bend to the left.
This sign warns of a sharp left turn. The bend is usually difficult to negotiate at the current speed, so slow down.
Pay close attention to other traffic; they may not adjust their speed, which can result in dangerous situations. Oncoming traffic that takes the bend too wide or comes out too wide can cross into your lane.
