Load on the roof

lading op het dak

You can attach a ski box or a roof rack to the roof of a car. If you have attached a ski box, you must place the goods you wish to transport in it.

Loads may not be transported directly on the roof of the car, but must be transported using a roof-mounted load carrier.

The load or parts thereof must be secured in such a way that they cannot fall off the vehicle or endanger its stability under normal traffic conditions, including heavy braking, sudden swerving, and poor road conditions.

If you have loaded the roof of the car, you must ensure that the load does not protrude more than 20 centimeters from the sides of the car.

Indivisible loads may not protrude more than 1 meter at the front or rear.

If you transport divisible loads on the roof of a car, these loads may not protrude beyond the front of the car. At the rear, divisible loads may protrude 1 meter.

If the load carrier is designed for the transport of specific goods, no other goods or more of these goods may be transported than those for which the design is intended. For example, if a bicycle rack for two bicycles is mounted on the roof of a car, you may only transport two bicycles on this load carrier and not three, or a ladder, for example.

A marking sign is not required if the load extends beyond the roof of a car.

Transporting something on the roof changes handling, increases air resistance, and reduces fuel consumption. Therefore, remove a ski box or roof rack from the car roof when you are no longer using it.

Distribute the weight of the load evenly across the load carriers. Place the heaviest items on the bottom.
Regularly check that the load carriers and the load are properly secured. Secure the load securely with lashing straps.
Drive smoothly. Do not accelerate too quickly, brake too hard, or make sharp turns.
