Technical requirements of trailers
Just like a car, a trailer must also meet specific legal requirements. For example, a trailer must be equipped with:
- A license plate on the rear of the trailer. This must be an approved white license plate with black numbers and letters. It must be the same license plate as the towing vehicle. This applies to trailers with a maximum permissible weight of less than 750 kilograms and bicycle racks. A piece of cardboard with the license plate written on it is, therefore, not acceptable.
- Trailers with a maximum permitted weight exceeding 750 kilograms must have their registration certificate. This also includes their own approved license plate.
- Two red triangles must be attached to the rear of the trailer.
- Two white retro-reflectors must be fitted at the front of the trailer.
- Yellow retro-reflectors must be fitted to the sides of the trailer, which may not be triangular.
- Tires with a profile of at least 1.6 millimeters
- Trailers with a maximum permissible weight of more than 750 kilograms must be equipped with a tie-down device.
- If the trailer is longer than 6 meters, it must be equipped with orange side marker lights. If the trailer is wider than 2.10 meters, it must also be equipped with two white marker lights at the front and two red ones at the rear.
Below are the rules regarding rear fog lights on trailers.
Trailers with a maximum permissible weight of no more than 750 kg must be equipped with one or two rear fog lights. This requirement applies regardless of the trailer’s year of manufacture. The following exceptions apply:
- If the vehicle towing the trailer does not have a rear fog light, the trailer does not need to be equipped with a rear fog light either.
- If the vehicle towing the trailer has one or two rear fog lights, only the rear fog lights on the trailer need to be on. However, the rear fog lights must be operated via a switch in the towing vehicle.
Trailers with a maximum permissible weight of more than 750 kilos must have one or two rear fog lights if the trailer’s registration certificate shows a date of first registration after December 31, 1997. If the trailer was registered earlier, a rear fog light is not mandatory.
A trailer must be equipped with:
- 2 brake lights
- license plate lighting
- 2 right and left rear turn signals
- 2 taillights
- 2 city lights at the front
