Trailers and your driver’s license

The driving licence B authorises you to drive:
- Motor carriages on three wheels, other than two-wheeled motor carriages with sidecars.
- Motor carriages with four or more wheels, the maximum permissible mass of which does not exceed 3,500 kilograms and which are not designed to transport more than eight persons, not including the driver.
- Motor carriages designed for the transport of a maximum of eight persons, not including the driver, whose permissible mass exceeds 3,500 kilograms as a result of armour fitted to the vehicle.
To take driving lessons, you must be at least 16.5 years old. Your driving license must not have been revoked, nor may your driver’s license have been confiscated.
You may tow a trailer without a B+ or BE driving license, provided that:
- the trailer’s maximum permissible weight does not exceed 750 kilograms, even if the total weight of the towing vehicle and trailer exceeds 3,500 kilograms.
- the maximum permitted mass of the trailer exceeds 750 kilograms, as long as the total mass of the towing vehicle and trailer does not exceed 3,500 kilograms.
From the above, you can deduce that you are always allowed to transport a trailer up to 750 kilos, even if the combined weight of the car and trailer exceeds 3500 kg. Keep this in mind because you’ll often be asked these kinds of questions at the CBR.
